Travelling around Cairns and Tropical North Queensland by campervan is one of the easiest ways to explore the region — but knowing where to shop, fill up, get cash, find drinking water or empty a toilet can make life on the road much easier.

This local guide covers the everyday things you might need while travelling around Cairns, Port Douglas, the Daintree, Atherton Tablelands and Mission Beach.

Cairns has the biggest choice of supermarkets, fuel stations, pharmacies, camping equipment and other supplies, so it's a good place to get organised before starting your road trip.

You'll find Woolworths, Coles, IGA and independent supermarkets throughout Cairns.

Good areas for stocking up include:

Cairns City & Cairns Central

Easy if you're already exploring the CBD.

Earlville & Stockland Cairns

A convenient shopping area south of the CBD.

Smithfield

A particularly useful stop if you're heading north towards Palm Cove, Port Douglas or the Daintree.

Local tip: Do your biggest shop in Cairns if you're heading into the Daintree. You'll still find supplies further north, but there is less choice.

Cairns

Cairns is your easiest place to stock the camper, particularly at the beginning of your trip.

Best for:

🧭 Heading North – Palm Cove → Port Douglas → Mossman → Daintree

Palm Cove is beautiful for a stop, beach walk, coffee or meal, but it isn't where we'd recommend doing your major campervan shop.If you need lots of supplies, stock up around Smithfield before continuing north.

Good for:

There is free public parking at the northern end

of Williams Esplanade near Palm Cove Jetty, including car-and-trailer spaces.

🧭 Heading North – Palm Cove → Port Douglas → Mossman → Daintree

Port Douglas

Port Douglas has supermarkets, fuel, ATMs, pharmacies, laundromats and plenty of places to eat.

It's a good place to restock before continuing towards Mossman and the Daintree.

Good for:

Local tip: Port Douglas is a tourist town, so Cairns can be better for doing your big shop. Use Port Douglas for topping up supplies..

🧭 Heading North – Palm Cove → Port Douglas → Mossman → Daintree

Mossman

Mossman is an excellent practical stop before travelling farther into the Daintree.

You'll find supermarkets, fuel, ATMs and other everyday services.

Good for:

Local tip: If you're heading across the Daintree River towards Cape Tribulation, this is a sensible place to check your fuel, food and water.

🧭 Heading North – Palm Cove → Port Douglas → Mossman → Daintree

Daintree & Cape Tribulation

Once you cross into the Daintree, you're entering a much less developed area.

There are shops, cafés, accommodation and fuel available in the region, but don't expect Cairns-style convenience.

Before heading in:

✓ Fill your fuel tank

✓ Have drinking water

✓ Carry food

✓ Have some cash

✓ Download your maps

✓ Check your phone battery

✓ Check road conditions

Mobile reception can also become patchy.

Local tip: Don't rely entirely on EFTPOS in remote areas. Carrying a little cash is worthwhile.

⛰️ Heading West – Kuranda → Mareeba → Atherton Tablelands

Kuranda

Kuranda has shops, cafés, markets, ATMs and basic supplies, but it isn't the best place for a large grocery shop.

For a major restock, continue towards Mareeba or Atherton.

Mareeba

Mareeba is one of the best places on the northern Tablelands for campervan travellers to restock.

Good for:

Mareeba is also surrounded by farms and orchards, so keep an eye out for seasonal local produce.

⛰️ Heading West – Kuranda → Mareeba → Atherton Tablelands

Atherton

Atherton is another excellent campervan supply stop and one of the major service towns on the Tablelands.

Good for:

If you're exploring waterfalls, crater lakes and the southern Tablelands, Atherton is a good place to reset and restock.

🍌 Heading South – Gordonvale → Babinda → Innisfail → Mission Beach

Gordonvale

Only a short drive south of Cairns, Gordonvale is useful for groceries, fuel and everyday supplies.

Babinda

Babinda is particularly useful for campervan travellers.

You'll find:

There are two free short-term Council camping areas at Babinda Rotary Park and Babinda Boulders.

🍌 Heading South – Gordonvale → Babinda → Innisfail → Mission Beach

Innisfail

Innisfail is one of the biggest towns between Cairns and Mission Beach and is a very useful place to restock.

Good for:

⛽ Fuel

It's a particularly useful stop if you're exploring the Cassowary Coast or waterfalls around the Palmerston area.

🍌 Heading South – Gordonvale → Babinda → Innisfail → Mission Beach

Mission Beach & Tully

Mission Beach has groceries, fuel, ATMs, cafés and other everyday supplies.

For a bigger range of practical services, Tully is another useful nearby option.

Good for:

And remember — you're in cassowary country. Drive carefully, particularly around rainforest roads.

You can use cards almost everywhere in Cairns and the larger towns.

ATMs are easy to find in:

Cairns • Smithfield • Port Douglas • Mossman • Mareeba • Atherton • Innisfail • Tully

Having some cash is still useful for:

📵 Places where mobile reception affects EFTPOS

You don't need to carry large amounts — just enough that losing mobile reception doesn't become a problem.

⛽ FUEL – DON'T WAIT UNTIL EMPTY

Fuel is easy to find around Cairns and the main regional towns.

Our simple rule:

When travelling somewhere remote, don't wait until the fuel warning light comes on.

Good places to fill up include:

Cairns • Smithfield • Port Douglas • Mossman • Mareeba • Atherton • Gordonvale • Innisfail • Tully

Fuel prices can vary considerably between locations, so comparing prices before filling up can save money.

💧 DRINKING WATER

Cairns has treated town water.

When filling camper drinking-water containers, make sure the tap is specifically intended for potable/drinking water.

Never assume a tap beside an RV dump point contains drinking water.

If you're heading somewhere remote, fill your water containers before leaving the larger towns.

🧺 LAUNDRY

Self-service laundromats are easy to find around Cairns and the major regional towns.

Most caravan parks also provide washing machines and dryers.

A useful vanlife routine is:

Laundry + supermarket + fuel at the same stop.

Public toilets are widely available around:

Palm Cove

larger towns

Once you travel into more remote areas, facilities become less frequent.

Vanlife rule: If you see a good public toilet when you're travelling remotely, use it. Don't assume another one will appear five minutes down the road!

🦟 MOSQUITOES, MIDGES & ANTS

Welcome to the tropics!

Mosquitoes and biting midges can be particularly active around rainforest, mangroves and waterways.

Keep insect repellent handy, particularly around dawn and dusk.

Close mosquito screens before turning the camper lights on at night.

And don't leave sugary food or rubbish open.

Tropical ants are extremely good at discovering dinner.

🏕️ CAMPING & VAN SUPPLIES

Forgot something?

Don't worry — Cairns has plenty of places selling camping and outdoor equipment.

Around Cairns you'll find camping retailers, hardware stores and department stores selling different camping equipment.

For ordinary items, check supermarkets and department stores before specialist camping shops — they're often cheaper.

☀️FOOD & TROPICAL HEAT

Cairns can be hot and humid.

Don't leave food that needs refrigeration sitting inside a hot parked camper.

Keep your fridge running correctly and use an esky with ice if you need extra cold storage.

Ice is readily available from supermarkets and many service stations.

🌧️ WET SEASON & ROAD CONDITIONS

Tropical North Queensland's wet season can bring extremely heavy rainfall.

Conditions can change quickly, particularly around creeks, rivers and low-lying roads.

Never drive through floodwater.

Before heading off during heavy rain, check QLDTraffic for current road conditions, closures and flooding.

Also check the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) for weather warnings and rain radar.

💤 CAN I JUST SLEEP IN THE VAN ANYWHERE?

Cairns Regional Council does not permit camping on Council-controlled:

roadsides

beaches

public parks

car parks

the Esplanade

sporting grounds

drainage reserves

That includes staying overnight in a campervan or RV. Use an approved campground, caravan park or designated camping area instead.

There are some fantastic inexpensive and free camping options once you travel outside central Cairns.

🅿️ PARKING YOUR CAMPERVAN

Most of our campervans are easy to park, but there are a few things worth remembering.

Watch undercover parking heights

Shopping centres and hotel car parks can have height restrictions.

Check before entering.

Bigger camper or motorhome?

Look for open-air parking rather than trying to squeeze into a standard undercover car park.

Cairns Council's Hartley Street Car Park has dedicated RV bays for larger recreational vehicles.

Being legally parked somewhere does not automatically mean you're allowed to sleep there overnight.

📱 PHONE RECEPTION & OFFLINE MAPS

Reception is generally good around Cairns and the major towns but can become patchy in rainforest, mountainous and remote areas.

Before heading somewhere remote, download:

✓ Ferry or attraction information

Taking screenshots of important information is another easy backup.

💊 PHARMACIES & MEDICAL HELP

Cairns has pharmacies, medical centres and Cairns Hospital.

You'll also find pharmacies in larger towns including:

Port Douglas
Mossman
Mareeba
Atherton
Innisfail
Tully

If you need essential medication, organise it before travelling into remote areas.

🐊 A FEW LOCAL RULES THAT REALLY MATTER

Don't swim just because the water looks beautiful.

Far North Queensland has crocodile habitat, marine stingers, strong currents and waterways that can change dramatically after rain.

Use recognised swimming areas and follow local signs.

Don't underestimate driving times.

The map can be deceptive.

Mountain roads, rainforest roads and scenic routes can make journeys considerably slower than expected.

Carry water.

Even a short walk can feel very different in tropical heat and humidity.

Start early.

Early mornings are cooler, roads can be quieter and wildlife is often more active.

MY LOCAL VAN LIFE TIPS

Shop before you go remote.

Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton and Innisfail are much better places for a large grocery shop than tiny tourist towns.

Keep a little cash.

You probably won't need it often, but you'll appreciate having it when you find a roadside fruit stall.

Don't plan every hour.

Some of the best places in FNQ are the waterfall, swimming hole, lookout or little town you weren't planning to stop at.

Use the bigger towns as reset points.

Fuel + groceries + laundry + water + charging, then head back out exploring.

Download before you drive.

Don't wait until you're deep in rainforest to discover your map hasn't loaded.

And don't rush.

Far North Queensland is much better explored slowly.
