Coffee, Palms & a Walk Along the Jetty
Turn off the highway and follow the road down to Williams Esplanade, where enormous old melaleuca trees lean over the beachfront. Grab a coffee, wander out along the jetty and take your first proper look at the Coral Sea.
If you're starting early from Cairns, Palm Cove is an excellent breakfast stop.

The Roadside Beach You'll Want to Stop At.
This is where the drive starts becoming seriously beautiful.
Ellis Beach is long, tropical and wonderfully uncomplicated. Pull over, kick your shoes off and walk along the sand before continuing north.
It's also one of the better places along the drive to stop for something to eat rather than trying to reach Port Douglas as quickly as possible.

If you have never seen a Saltie.
You don't have to stop at every paid attraction on a North Queensland road trip, but if you're travelling with kids — or you've come all the way from overseas and have never seen a saltwater crocodile — Hartley's Crocodile Adventures is worth knowing about.
This isn't a quick roadside stop. If you're going in, give it a proper few hours.

If you only make one quick stop on the entire drive, make it Rex Lookout.
The highway climbs above the Coral Sea and suddenly opens onto one of the great coastal views of Tropical North Queensland — mountains, ocean, beaches and Double Island stretching away below.
Pull in. Get out. Take the photograph.
You may even see hang-gliders launching from the hill when conditions are right.

One for the Cameras!
You'll know you're getting close when the landscape starts looking almost ridiculously tropical.
The coconut plantation around Thala Beach Nature Reserve has become one of the iconic photographic landscapes of this stretch of coast.
This is one of those places where it's worth slowing down rather than flying past at highway speed. The palms, mountains and tropical coastline make this whole area beautiful for photographs.
Just remember that the resort and parts of the property are private — enjoy publicly accessible areas and don't wander through private grounds simply to get a photograph.

The Local Crocodile Stop. Now here's one that doesn't appear in every glossy tourist brochure.
As you cross the Mowbray River, there's a well-known crocodile viewing area where locals and regular visitors sometimes stop and scan the mudbanks below. You might see a crocodile.You might see absolutely nothing. That's wildlife. But that's half the fun of pulling over and having a look.
Never go down onto the riverbank looking for crocodiles. Saltwater crocodiles live throughout this region and should always be viewed from a safe, elevated position.

Port Douglas has always been a bit different. It's tropical Queensland with its shoes off — but with a surprisingly glamorous streak.
Once a sleepy fishing and sugar town, Port Douglas changed dramatically during the 1980s when businessman Christopher Skase developed the lavish Sheraton Mirage. Celebrities, wealthy holidaymakers and high-profile visitors followed, and Port Douglas gained its reputation as something of a millionaire's playground. Yet somehow it never completely lost its village feel.
You can still wander around in thongs, buy a pie from a bakery, sit under a palm tree and watch the sunset for absolutely nothing.
That's probably why Port Douglas works.
You can't really say you've been to Port Douglas without walking Four Mile Beach. Despite the name, it's actually around 6.5 km long, sweeping from Flagstaff Hill south along the peninsula. Go early. Take a coffee.
Walk barefoot along the hard sand while Port Douglas is waking up.
Sunrise here can be spectacular.

Don't just photograph Four Mile Beach from ground level. Walk up. The Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail connects the Four Mile Beach area with the other side of the Port Douglas headland and gives you those gorgeous elevated views over the coastline.
Trinity Bay Lookout is another little spot worth knowing about while you're up there.
It's one of the easiest ways to get a completely different perspective of Port Douglas without spending anything.

Macrossan Street runs through the centre of Port Douglas between Four Mile Beach and the inlet side of town. Park the camper and wander. There are cafés, pubs, restaurants, little shops, galleries, ice cream, bakeries and plenty of places to sit and watch the town go by.
Mocka's Pies is a Port Douglas Institution. Just off Macrossan St, it has been part of the town for decades and is one of those places generations of locals and visitors know. This is exactly the sort of food stop we love on a road trip: inexpensive, casual and unmistakably Australian.

If you're in town on Sunday, go. The Port Douglas Markets run every Sunday at Market Park beside ANZAC Park and St Mary's by the Sea.
This isn't just rows of generic souvenirs. It's a Cotters Market with a strong focus on people selling things they've grown, made or produced themselves.
You'll find tropical fruit, local food, jewellery, clothing, art, handmade products and all sorts of wonderfully random things you didn't know you needed.
There are more than 150 artisan stalls on a typical Sunday.

After the market, don't jump straight back in the van. Walk towards the water. The tiny white timber St Mary's by the Sea church and the old Port Douglas Sugar Wharf are remnants of a very different Port Douglas.
Before luxury resorts and superyachts, this was a working port connected to the sugar industry.
They're also two of the prettiest places in town for photographs.

Here's one of the best things to do in Port Douglas, and it costs nothing. Late afternoon, grab a couple of cold drinks and something to nibble on and head to Rex Smeal Park. Sit under the palms. Watch the boats. Watch the mountains change colour.
Watch half of Port Douglas appear to have had exactly the same idea.
This is one of those simple tropical moments you'll remember longer than some of the expensive ones.

Even if you're not heading out on a boat, wander around the marina.
Watch the reef boats come home, look at the yachts and grab something to eat or drink beside the water.
And keep your eyes on the inlet.
This is crocodile country.
You occasionally hear stories of people seeing one cruising through the water, which is considerably more enjoyable when you're safely standing on dry land.

If you're travelling with children, Wildlife Habitat is one of the easiest bigger activities to add to a Port Douglas stay.
Cassowaries, crocodiles, kangaroos, wallabies and other Australian wildlife are represented in large naturalistic habitats.
It's also conveniently located near the entrance to Port Douglas, so you don't need to drive through town to reach it.

One important thing first:
Don't assume you can simply sleep in your camper beside Four Mile Beach or in a Port Douglas car park. Use an authorised caravan park or campground.
If you want to park the van and explore Port Douglas mostly on foot, Tropic Breeze Caravan Park on Davidson Street is very conveniently located close to Four Mile Beach and the town centre.
Another central option is Pandanus Caravan Park.
Families wanting more of a holiday-park experience can look at BIG4 Port Douglas Glengarry Holiday Park in the Mowbray area just outside town.
Book ahead during the dry-season peak.
This is classic Port Douglas weather.
Warm sunny days, lower humidity, cooler evenings and generally less rain.
It's also the busiest period, so caravan parks and accommodation can book out.
Hotter. Wetter. More humid.
But don't write it off.
The rainforest turns ridiculously green, tropical storms can be spectacular, waterfalls are flowing and there are usually fewer visitors.
It's also marine-stinger season, so swimming needs a little more thought.
You can see Port Douglas in a day. But we wouldn't.
Two nights gives you time to enjoy the town rather than ticking it off the list. Three nights is even better.
Walk Four Mile Beach at sunrise. Eat the pie. Wander the Sunday Market. Climb Flagstaff Hill. Have a lazy afternoon. Sit at Rex Smeal Park for sunset.
Port Douglas isn't really a place you need to rush around.
It's a place you need to slow down in.
And when you've got your little home on wheels parked nearby, that's pretty easy to do.
