Cairns is an incredibly easy place to explore with children.

Between the free Esplanade Lagoon, huge waterfront playgrounds, water parks, wildlife experiences, tropical gardens and family attractions, there are plenty of things to do without having to spend every day on an organised tour.

If you're travelling around Far North Queensland in a campervan, these are some of the best places to let the kids swim, play, explore and burn off some energy between the bigger reef and rainforest adventures

Cairns Esplanade & LagooN

The easiest free family day in Cairns. The Cairns Esplanade is one of the best places to start when exploring Cairns with children. Stretching along the waterfront, the Esplanade combines the huge saltwater Lagoon, playgrounds, picnic areas, free BBQs, walking and cycling paths, beach volleyball, basketball, fitness equipment and large grassy areas.

The centrepiece is the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — a large saltwater swimming lagoon right on the waterfront. It is free to use and lifeguard-patrolled during operating hours, with shallow areas that make it particularly popular with families. Bring swimmers, towels and some food and it is very easy to spend several hours here without spending much at all.

There are free BBQs around the Esplanade, as well as cafes, restaurants, toilets, showers and changing facilities nearby.

Muddy´s playground 🛝

The easiest If you're travelling with younger children, Muddy's Playground deserves its own stop. Located right on the Cairns Esplanade, this large free playground combines traditional play equipment with water play.

Kids can run between splash areas, slides, a flying fox, rope bridge, play houses, climbing equipment, puzzles and interactive features. There are different areas to explore, making it suitable for a range of ages rather than being a tiny playground that children are finished with in ten minutes.

It is also very easy for parents — there are toilets, picnic tables, BBQs and a cafe right beside the playground. Bring a change of clothes. There is a very good chance the kids are going to get wet.

FIG TREE PLAYGROUND 🌳

A magical little playground under a giant fig tree. Right in the heart of Cairns is a family stop that's particularly good when you're travelling with younger children.

Fig Tree Play Ground sits beneath an enormous fig tree on the Cairns Esplanade, giving children somewhere shady and interesting to climb, explore and play. It's an easy activity to add between other Cairns attractions without organising an entire day around it.

Take a walk along the waterfront, stop here to let the little ones play and then continue towards the Lagoon, marina or Cairns CBD.

Centenary lakes - natural play space

For something very different from a conventional playground, head to the Centenary Lakes Nature Play Space beside the Cairns Botanic Gardens.Instead of rows of brightly coloured plastic play equipment, the idea here is to encourage children to climb, balance, explore, experiment and interact with their natural surroundings.The play space sits within the tropical Centenary Lakes precinct and includes nature-based, sensory, balancing, climbing and interactive play elements.

It works particularly well combined with the Botanic Gardens and nearby rainforest boardwalk.

For campervan families, it is a great slower-paced morning or afternoon when everyone needs a break from organised tours.

Cairns Botanic gardens 🌴

The Cairns Botanic Gardens contains an extraordinary collection of tropical plants, with huge leaves, palms, colourful flowers and rainforest vegetation creating the feeling of walking through a tropical jungle..

For children, the gardens work particularly well when you don't treat them like a formal garden that everyone needs to quietly walk around.

Let them look for strange plants, butterflies, birds, giant leaves and insects and combine the visit with Centenary Lakes and the Nature Play Space.

It is an easy way to introduce children to the tropical environment before heading further into Far North Queensland.

Cairns AQUARIUM

¡See the reef and rainforest without leaving the city!

If the tropical rain decides to arrive — or everyone simply needs a break from the heat — Cairns Aquarium is one of the easiest family attractions in the city.

The aquarium brings together animals and habitats from Tropical North Queensland, taking visitors from rainforest rivers and freshwater environments through mangroves and onto the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea.

There are more than 16,000 aquatic animals represented across multiple tropical ecosystems and habitats. For children, one of the highlights is the Marine Touch Tank, where supervised encounters can include creatures such as sea stars and sea cucumbers.

There are also educational presentations throughout the day covering sharks and rays, reef animals and freshwater species. It's particularly useful for families because it is an all-weather attraction right in Cairns.

Sugarworld adventure park 🛝

Wildlife with an Waterslides, splash zones and mini golf

When Sugarworld is open for the warmer season, this is one of the big family days out around Cairns. Located in Edmonton, around 20 minutes south of central Cairns, Sugarworld Adventure Park combines swimming pools, waterslides, children's water play and mini golf within tropical parkland.

For younger children there is Splash Town, with seven smaller slides, pools, fountains, waterfalls, water jets and a giant tipping bucket. Bigger kids can move onto the Super Slides, including a Mat Racer, Super Jet and Tandem Tube Raft slide.

There is also a nine-hole adventure mini-golf course, pools and shaded areas.

Important: Sugarworld operates seasonally and closes its water attractions over the cooler months, so always check current opening dates before driving there.

Cairns Museum🖼️

A good rainy-day surprise

Museums aren't always the first thing children ask to do on a tropical holiday, but the Cairns Museum has deliberately made its experience family friendly. There are interactive exhibits, listening stations, children's activity areas and self-guided family activities including scavenger hunts and activity trails.

The museum tells the story of Cairns and tropical life, which can make much more sense to children after they have already spent a few days exploring the region. It is air-conditioned, pram and stroller friendly and has lift access between levels — making it a particularly useful option for a wet or very hot afternoon.

Crystal cascadES

A rainforest swimming adventure close to Cairns

If your teenagers would rather jump into a freshwater swimming hole than visit another tourist attraction, Crystal Cascades is an easy choice. Hidden in rainforest just outside Cairns, the area has a series of freshwater pools, small waterfalls and walking tracks.

Bring swimmers, towels and lunch and spend a few hours exploring the different pools.

There are also picnic tables, BBQs and toilets, making it easy to turn the visit into a half-day family outing.

Pack a picnic, wear shoes suitable for rocks and spend a relaxed morning swimming and exploring. It feels surprisingly wild considering how close you are to Cairns.

If you've brought bikes on the road trip, this is one to remember.

Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park has a network of mountain-bike trails through forest near Atherton and is one of the best ways to add some real adventure to a Tablelands road trip.

There are trails for different abilities, so families can choose something appropriate for their experience level rather than everyone having to ride the same type of terrain.

Best of all, riding the trails themselves doesn't require an attraction ticket

lake eacham 🥽

A lake inside an old volcanic crater is already a pretty good way to get teenagers interested.Lake Eacham is surrounded by rainforest on the Atherton Tablelands and is one of the easiest places to combine swimming, walking and a picnic.

You can walk around the lake, look for wildlife and then cool off in the clear freshwater.

Pack lunch and make it part of a bigger Tablelands road trip.

Hartley´s crocodile aventure 🐊

For families with older children and teenagers, this is one of those experiences they'll probably still be talking about after the holiday.Hartley's Crocodile Adventures is around 40 minutes north of Cairns on the beautiful Captain Cook Highway.

The big attraction is obviously the crocodiles. Families can take a boat cruise through Hartley's Lagoon, watch crocodile feeding and attack presentations and explore more than two kilometres of boardwalks through tropical surroundings. But it isn't only crocodiles.

There are cassowaries, koalas, kangaroos, snakes and other Australian wildlife, so there's enough here to easily fill several hours.

Kuranda markets 🛍️

Kuranda is one of those places where simply wandering around is part of the experience.

The famous Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets sit among tropical gardens in the heart of the village, with small stalls selling handmade jewellery, clothing, art, crafts, gifts and plenty of unusual things for teenagers to browse.

There are tropical treats, local food, cafés and colourful characters along the way, and the relaxed rainforest atmosphere makes it easy to spend a couple of hours exploring without needing to book an attraction.

Kuranda actually has two market areas — the Original Rainforest Markets and the Heritage Markets — so combine them with a walk around the village for an easy family day.

Cairns wake park 💦

If your kids have energy to burn, Cairns Wake Park is one of the most exciting family activities close to Cairns.

Located at Smithfield, the park combines cable wakeboarding with a floating Aqua Park filled with inflatable obstacles, slides, runways and jumping areas.

Beginners don't need to know how to wakeboard before arriving. The Wake Park caters for beginners through to experienced riders, with basic beginner equipment, life jackets and helmets included.

The Aqua Park is another great option for families, particularly if everyone wants to get involved. Children need to be at least six years old and able to swim proficiently.

For older kids and teenagers, you can even combine the Aqua Park and Wake Park for a bigger day on the water.
