You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on tours to have an incredible time in Far North Queensland.

Some of the region's best experiences are completely free — swimming beneath waterfalls, walking through World Heritage rainforest, finding platypus, exploring volcanic crater lakes, watching the sunset from tropical beaches and discovering places that many organised tours never reach.

Here are the ones we would seriously consider including.

Cairns city and surroundings

Tanks Arts Centre — Edge Hill

Old World War II fuel tanks have been transformed into one of Cairns’ most unusual arts spaces.

Check what exhibitions are showing while you are in town.

Cairns Botanic Gardens — Edge Hill

It is one of the easiest ways to experience the incredible plants of the Wet Tropics without leaving Cairns.

Centenary Lakes — Edge Hill

Wetlands, rainforest and easy walking paths sit beside the Cairns Botanic Gardens.

Keep an eye out for birds, turtles and other wildlife around the lakes.

Rainforest Boardwalk — Edge Hill

Red Arrow Walk — Edge Hill

One of Cairns’ favourite local exercise walks.

The trail climbs through rainforest above the Botanic Gardens and is perfect for an early-morning walk.

Cairns Esplanade Birdwatching

The tidal flats along the Cairns waterfront attract an incredible variety of shorebirds.

Bring binoculars if you have them and walk along the Esplanade as the tide changes.

Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

Swim in the huge lagoon right on the Cairns waterfront.

There are lawns, picnic areas and BBQs surrounding it, making this an easy place to spend several hours without spending anything.

Cairns Esplanade

Walk or cycle along the waterfront and enjoy recreation areas, exercise equipment, playgrounds and free BBQ facilities.

Muddy’s Playground

One of Cairns’ best attractions for young families — and it costs nothing.

There are water-play areas, climbing equipment and plenty of shady spaces.

Right in the Cairns CBD, it’s an easy free activity and a great option when it’s raining or you need a break from the tropical heat.

Walk through colourful stalls packed with tropical fruit, vegetables, spices and local food.

Bring a few dollars and try some tropical fruit you may never have seen before.

Crystal Cascades — Redlynch Valley

A beautiful series of freshwater swimming holes and waterfalls hidden in the rainforest just outside Cairns.

Follow the walking path beside the creek and choose your favourite spot for a swim.

Stoney Creek — Kamerunga

A favourite local swimming spot with clear freshwater, rocky pools and rainforest.

There are plenty of places to cool off and walking tracks leading further into Barron Gorge National Park.

A serene crystal-clear swimming hole surrounded by large granite boulders and lush tropical rainforest trees at Crystal Cascades.

The Rocks — Redlynch

A simple local freshwater swimming spot away from the main tourist attractions.

Bring your swimmers, towel and picnic and enjoy an inexpensive afternoon beside the creek.

South to mission beach

Babinda Boulders — Babinda

Huge granite boulders, clear rainforest water and beautiful swimming areas make this one of the best free adventures south of Cairns.

There are walking tracks, picnic areas, BBQs and toilets.

Cardwell Spa Pool — Cardwell

A naturally coloured freshwater swimming hole hidden in the forest behind Cardwell.

Its famous blue colour can change dramatically depending on rainfall and water conditions.

Mission Beach

Bingil Bay

Etty Bay

A beautiful tropical beach south of Innisfail where wild cassowaries are sometimes seen around the beach and surrounding rainforest.

Never approach or feed a cassowary — enjoy them from a safe distance.

Davies Creek Falls — Near Mareeba

Granite boulders, clear freshwater and open forest make Davies Creek completely different from the wetter rainforest around Cairns.

Walk to the waterfall viewpoints, swim in the creek and bring a picnic for an easy half-day adventure.

Emerald Creek Falls — Near Mareeba

Malanda Falls — Malanda

An easy waterfall and freshwater swimming stop right beside Malanda.

It is simple to add to a day exploring the southern Atherton Tablelands.

Millaa Millaa Falls

One of Far North Queensland’s most famous waterfalls.

The 18-metre waterfall drops into a beautiful rainforest pool and is an easy stop while exploring the Tablelands.

Zillie Falls

A powerful rainforest waterfall just a short distance from Millaa Millaa.

Stop at the lookout and watch the water disappear into the forest below.

Ellinjaa Falls

A peaceful waterfall reached by a short walk through rainforest.

It is smaller and quieter than Millaa Millaa and well worth adding to your Tablelands adventure.

Lake Barrine — Atherton Tablelands

FREE to explore

Another beautiful volcanic crater lake surrounded by rainforest.

Walk along the lake edge, enjoy a picnic and explore the surrounding forest without needing to book a cruise.

Hasties Swamp — Atherton

A large wetland and excellent birdwatching area just outside Atherton.

Visit the bird hide and look for waterbirds, migratory species and other wildlife.

Peterson Creek Platypus Walk — Yungaburra

Walk beside Peterson Creek and see if you can spot a wild platypus.

Early morning and late afternoon are generally the best times to look.

One of the Atherton Tablelands’ most extraordinary trees.

Hallorans Hill — Atherton

Walk to the top of an extinct volcanic cinder cone overlooking Atherton and the surrounding countryside.

It is a great way to see the volcanic landscape that created much of the Tablelands.

North to cape tribulation

Palm Cove

Walk beneath the palms and huge melaleuca trees along one of Cairns’ best-known northern beaches.

There are picnic areas, BBQs and a jetty along the foreshore.

Trinity Beach

A relaxed tropical beach north of Cairns with a beautiful foreshore and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the coast.

Yorkeys Knob Beach

A long, quieter beach north of Cairns that often feels much less touristy than Palm Cove.

Ellis Beach

A beautiful stretch of tropical coastline beside the Great Barrier Reef Drive.

Pull over, stretch your legs and take a walk along the sand.

Four Mile Beach — Port Douglas

Walk along one of Tropical North Queensland’s most famous beaches.

Start near Port Douglas and wander for as little or as long as you like.

Flagstaff Hill — Port Douglas

Walk around the headland for sweeping views across Four Mile Beach and the Coral Sea.

If you don’t want the walk, you can also drive to the main lookout.

The coastal road between Cairns and Port Douglas is an adventure in itself.

Ocean on one side, rainforest-covered mountains on the other — stop at beaches and lookouts along the way.

A quiet and relatively undeveloped beach between Cairns and Port Douglas.

A beautiful place to stop while travelling the Great Barrier Reef Drive.

Mareeba Heritage Museum

Around $5 for adults - Check current prices before visiting.

An excellent low-cost attraction telling the story of Mareeba and the surrounding Tablelands.

There is much more inside than you might expect, making it particularly good value for families and history lovers.

It feels like a proper wildlife attraction without the big-ticket price.

Mossman Gorge

Low-cost shuttle - Check current shuttle prices before visiting.

Experience beautiful World Heritage rainforest and walking tracks in Mossman Gorge.

Visitors generally use the shuttle from the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, making this an inexpensive way to experience one of the region’s best-known rainforest locations.

A peaceful campground about 25 minutes south of Cairns with toilets, showers and dump point. Low-cost rather than free and a great first or last night near Cairns. Seasonal operation.

Goldsborough Valley – Wooroonooran National Park

Rainforest camping beside the Mulgrave River

A beautiful low-cost National Park camp surrounded by rainforest. Toilets, BBQs and fire rings, with 2WD access with care.

🌴 SOUTH — BABINDA → MISSION BEACH

Rotary Park – Babinda

One of the best free camps south of Cairns

A popular free stop beside Babinda Creek with toilets and a dump point. Easy walk into town and a great base for exploring Babinda.

The Boulders free Camping Ground – Babinda

Free rainforest camping near the Boulders

A small, beautiful free campground surrounded by rainforest near Babinda Boulders. Toilets, BBQs, swimming and walking tracks nearby.

Henrietta Creek – Wooroonooran National Park

Camp deep in the Wet Tropics rainforest

A gorgeous low-cost rainforest campground beside Henrietta Creek. Toilets, picnic tables and gas BBQs with 2WD access.

Murray Falls camping area, Girramay National Park

One of the best National Park camps south of Cairns

Large grassy campground beneath shady trees near spectacular Murray Falls. Toilets, cold showers, BBQs and swimming, with easy 2WD access. Campervans and motorhomes are welcome.

⛰️ WEST — ATHERTON TABLELANDS

Lower Davies Creek – Davies Creek National Park

Creekside camping among granite boulders

One of my favourites for your website. Beautiful clear water, woodland and granite boulders. Low-cost National Park camping with conventional-vehicle access.

Downfall Creek camping area, Danbulla National Park and State Forest – Lake Tinaroo

Beautiful lakeside camping

A great low-cost camping spot beside Lake Tinaroo, surrounded by forest. Perfect for swimming, kayaking and a quiet night in the Tablelands.

Platypus Campground, Danbulla National Park and State Forest – Lake Tinaroo

Peaceful camping beside the lake

Another excellent Danbulla option for campervan travellers exploring Lake Tinaroo and the central Tablelands.

School Point – National Park & State Forest

Open lakeside camping with beautiful views

A relaxed campground overlooking Lake Tinaroo and a good base for exploring the waterfalls and villages of the Tablelands. Queensland Parks lists it as one of the established Danbulla camping areas.

Fong-On Bay – Danbulla National Park & State Forest

Bush camping on Lake Tinaroo

A larger forest campground beside the lake, great for travellers wanting somewhere quiet and inexpensive.

Kauri Creek – Danbulla National Park & State Forest

Secluded forest and lakeside camping

A quieter National Park option surrounded by forest with access to Lake Tinaroo.

🌳 NORTH — PORT DOUGLAS → DAINTREE → CAPE TRIBULATION

Rifle Creek – Mount Molloy

Great budget stop on the northern Tablelands

A useful established camping/rest area if travelling between Cairns, Mareeba, Port Douglas and the Daintree.

Noah Beach camping area, Daintree National Park – Cape Tribulation

Rainforest camping just 50 metres from the beach

This is the standout. Camp beneath the rainforest canopy between the Daintree and Great Barrier Reef. Toilets and 2WD access; suitable for small campervans, but not large/high vans.

Noah Beach is the ONLY camping area inside Daintree National Park. National Park camping isn't allowed elsewhere in the park.

And Noah Beach closes during part of the wet season, please check before travelling.

National Park camping is not free, but it is one of the cheapest ways to camp in Tropical North Queensland. Campsites must be booked before arrival and fees apply. Always check Queensland Parks alerts, road conditions and seasonal closures before travelling.
